Added to the mix was speedster Mecole Hardman, the Chiefs’ first selection in this past April’s draft.So when the Chiefs made a bold, all-in play over the weekend to sign two-time All-Pro running back LeSean McCoy, Mahomes could have been forgiven for not believing it. McCoy is expected to serve as the backup Sunday when the Chiefs open the regular season with a trip to Jacksonville.“He’s obviously been a great player in this league for a long time,” Mahomes said, “and someone who is a very intelligent guy to pick up the offense this fast. Any time you add good players, I’m excited.”Nobody quite knows what the 31-year-old McCoy has left after a down season in Buffalo, one that led the Bills to release him over the weekend. But with the Chiefs’ sheer quantity of offensive playmakers, McCoy doesn’t need to be the go-to player that he has been much of his career.That is one of the things that made signing with Kansas City so attractive.McCoy makes it clear that he expects to contribute in a big way to his first good chance at making a Super Bowl run. But McCoy also understands that the core of the Kansas City offense has been together for more than a year, and that joining the mix on the eve of the regular season could be a bit awkward.“The majority of my career, I’ve been the key guy. KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Chiefs are already planning their future around signing quarterback Patrick Mahomes to a long-term contract, even though the NFL MVP won’t be eligible to sign an extension until after next season.Chiefs general manager Brett Veach said during a wide-ranging interview Thursday that some of the financial decisions made dating back to last offseason were done with Mahomes in mind, such as the way the franchise structured contracts and how they approached free agency and the draft.“We were prepared for Pat to have success and be a franchise quarterback,” Veach said, “so this process of structuring ourselves for the next three, four, five years started about a year ago.”In the ensuing 12 months, the Chiefs traded incumbent quarterback Alex Smith to Washington and handed the job to Mahomes, who threw for more than 5,000 yards along with 50 touchdown passes while leading the club to its third straight AFC West title and the conference championship game.The Chiefs lost in overtime to the Patriots, a defeat made even more frustrating by the fact that Kansas City lost the coin flip and Mahomes never had a chance with the ball in the extra session.Off the field, Mahomes has become one of the NFL’s biggest stars.With his moppy Mohawk, earnest attitude and game-changing ability Mitchell Schwartz Jersey , Mahomes became must-watch TV by the end of the season. Regardless, the defense as a whole is so bad that the team needs to add talent wherever possible. Murphy would match well with Conley as one of Conley’s glaring weaknesses is his tackling. Defensive Coordinator Paul Guenther likes confusing opponents with a myriad of different looks, Murphy being a cerebral player will give Guenther another weapon to use. If the Raiders are able to add Murphy later in the first round, they would be getting a player who could start right away, either opposite of Conley or in the nickel.
